Death by suicide is an unfortunate part of today’s world. Suicide-related deaths occur in every demographic – the deaths occur in every culture, age group, community, and tax bracket. These are the current facts you need to know:
Suicide is currently the 10th leading cause of death in the United States of America, with over 44,000 people dying by suicide each year.
In Florida, suicide is the 8th leading cause of death with a slightly higher than average suicide death rate than the national average.
There is a national average of 121 deaths as a result of suicide every day.
In Florida, there is a suicide-related death every 3 hours.
For every death by suicide, there are 25 suicide attempts.
Firearms are the cause of death in most suicides.
Men are, on average, 3.5 times more likely to die by suicide than women, with about 70% being White males.
The age group with the highest suicide mortality rate is middle-aged (45-64 years old), followed by the 85 year old and up age group, then the 35-44 year old age group.
White individuals have the highest suicide mortality rate, followed by American Indian.
